Rosalie spoke with us about her passion for activism within the Jewish and LGBTQ+ communities. She discussed intersectionality, her stance on representation and her methods for advocating!1. It’s nice to speak with you, Rosalie! You previously mentioned that you are passionate about activism for the LGBTQ+ and Jewish communities. Could you provide us with a bit of background on why these two communities are important to you?
The LGBTQ+ and Jewish communities have always been a part of my life. I am also a part of both communities, and to me, it feels good to know people that have similar backgrounds that have my back. I've met so many queer Jewish teens through Keshet and NFTY that now I can talk to many people about anything because we have similar interests and backgrounds. 2. Do you feel that there are issues that overlap in both of these communities? If so, how are they intersectional? There are so many issues that overlap. A good one to mention would be how Orthodox Jewish communities are less likely to support queer marriage, while reform is usually more accepting. Both communities are associated with different political issues, but I think another good one would be women's rights. 3. Do you follow activists who are part of both the Jewish and LGBTQ+ communities? Yes!! I follow a few Jewish queer activists, one being Mattxiv. 4. How do you feel about the current representation of queer Jewish people in media? Is there a sufficient amount? I feel we are under-represented as it is 2021. While there is both Jewish and queer representation in shows and movies there is less of a queer-jewish representation. I think it would be crucial for young teens to see that representation in shows and such so then they can feel connected to the characters. 5. How do you advocate for both communities? Do you keep the activism separate or combine the two? I advocate for both groups, usually separately but when I find good information on both I share it. 6. Thank you so much for your enlightenment, Rosalie! Is there anything else you’d like to share with us? [Not that I can think of].. thank you!
